But the entire business model hinges on the ability to deliver energy to customers when and where they need it, in the most efficient way possible. This challenge demands customized coordination to meet customer needs: deliver “W” amount of energy, of “X” type, at “Y” latitude/longitude, at “Z” time, leveraging Booster’s distributed network of assets, including drivers, smart tankers, and fuel types.

Plenty of companies offer delivery and route planning software, but Booster’s rapidly expanding business model required something more. This is because Booster delivers a fungible product – liquid fuel of various types. This means that the same 100 gallons of renewable diesel can be delivered to Amazon, UPS or Impossible Foods.

The company also needed a platform that allowed for value-scoring events and challenges that pop up in the real world, e.g., a customer requires only drivers with security authorization to access their yard.

Prior to 2018, Booster was using a popular software-as-a-service (SaaS) routing platform that provided base-level service. But the engineering team wanted something better, and given the ever-increasing complexity – as well as the company’s growing investment in data analytics – Booster developed its own custom routing platform known internally as “Kasparov.”

Routing is Key

The Booster engineering team identified some areas of improvement that would allow us to provide better service to our customers. This included overcoming challenges like fulfilling and scoring complicated customers, addressing internal operations needs, and cost optimization for labor.

The team decided to invest in developing its own routing software and turned to John Carlsson, a published scholar and professor at the University of Southern California in the Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, to build what would eventually become Kasparov.

In the early days, Kasparov provided a good but inefficient solution. After several adaptations, Kasparov became much faster at solving problems (reducing the time from several hours to less than a minute) and handling multiple fuel types.

Today Kasparov includes complex business logic in the algorithm that takes real world factors into account when evaluating possible routes, while the routing team also works to improve the day-to-day experiences of Booster’s service professionals (SPs) and dispatch team members. For example, some customers require several thousand gallons in a single delivery, but spending more than a few hours at a customer site can be monotonous, and so Booster optimizes routes to account for tedium in SPs’ schedules.

Booster is getting more predictive, more intuitive and smarter with every new update as the engineering team continues to invest heavily in innovating its routing platform, because routing is at the crux of all success. Smoother, more efficient and more streamlined processes have an enormous impact on some of Booster’s most important KPIs: efficiency, profitability, and the SPs’ experience. As these metrics improve, business and customer satisfaction also improve.

And the real work on Kasparov is just getting started. Booster Routing 2.0 is coming soon. Today’s problems will continue to increase in complexity as business continues to grow and expand. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) executive order — the first of its kind in two decades — validated Booster technologies, giving Californians more definitive access to mobile fueling in most counties, and making Booster’s high standards for emissions reduction the benchmark for the industry.

Booster leads the field in mobile fueling because of its sterling safety and environmental records, and because it readily took a seat at the table when regulators were creating and adopting industry codes. Booster’s licensed and certified service professionals go through rigorous training in spill prevention, safety and hazardous materials handling.

Further, Booster technology prevents pollution — to the tune of 1.1 pounds of CO2 emissions per boost. The service is also carbon neutral, eliminates the use of underground storage of gasoline, and even improves vehicle efficiency by filling up drivers’ tires.

Since CARB is known to be one of the strictest environmental regulators in the country, this certification could serve as a template for other states seeking to meet decarbonization and similar sustainability goals, as alternatives to traditional refueling can help reduce transportation sector emissions. The average gas station spills 40 gallons of fuel annually and emits harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Ultimately, the CARB order enables communities to offer an alternative to traditional refueling. And as mobile fueling expands across the state, consumers and businesses of all sizes will gain access to a more environmentally friendly mobile gas station on demand.

This first feature release will allow our fleet customers to consolidate information with multiple locations and fuel types under one parent account, improving the reporting and billing experience.

Enterprise Level Reporting & Billing

Businesses with multiple locations no longer have to toggle between each location to see important fleet data. That means they can now view the fleet performance of all locations under a single parent account. It’s as simple as logging into the Booster Dashboard and viewing order information under “All Sites,” including last Service Date, Account Name, Fuel Type, Number of Vehicles Filled, Number of Gallons Dispensed and the Total Amount Charged.

There are also multiple ways to download data. Simply “Export Summation CSV” or “Export Details CSV” in the upper right-hand corner of the dashboard and export a CSV file for each individual order, each billing cycle for a single location or throughout the entire organization. Lastly, you have the ability to toggle service dates and export this data to a CSV file.

Consolidated Gas and Diesel Insights

Businesses that get boosted with both gas and diesel no longer have to toggle between accounts to see their important fleet data. We have consolidated gas and diesel insights and billing into one account. The top of the Booster Dashboard now allows users to toggle between All Fuel Types, Gas Only, and Diesel Only. They’ll be able to see the last service date, number of vehicles filled, fuel type, number of gallons dispensed, and the total amount charged, and export this information.
