This International Women’s Day, I wanted to share a personal story about my wife and how she inspired me to create Booster.  She was pregnant with our first child, and I took her car to the gas station to be filled up.  It was late at night.  Raining.  I didn’t want her to be exposed to the fumes, or the grimy pumps. She had been working all day.  I thought to myself, there’s got to be a better way.

Fast forward a few months later. While waiting to take off, I looked out of my airplane window and saw a tanker drive up and refuel an airplane.  I thought, why couldn’t the same thing be done for cars?  Booster was born.

We’ve now delivered millions of tanks of gas, and what makes Booster special is that all of us who work here recognize that there is a person behind every boost we deliver.  I personally think back to that night at the gas station.  I think about all the working women – and men that support them – and I’m glad Booster makes their life a little bit easier.  If we can play a small part in supporting women by fueling their drive, we will.  With honor.

Last year, we were proud to be recognized as one of the Top Companies for Women to Work for in Transportation.  I want to say thank you to all the talented women at Booster.  All of us feel a shared sense of responsibility for driving gender equality.

Thank you to my wife for not only being my partner, but the spark of inspiration for Booster.   Today, let’s recognize the achievements of women everywhere.

Booster began with a simple mission: eliminate the gas station errand for everyone.   We’re now four exhilarating years and over two million deliveries into this journey, all thanks to our extraordinary team and signature purple mini-tankers.  I am humbled by the stories that I hear about our impact every day.  From the busy parent now able to pick their child up on time to the small business now serving more customers with less operational headache, we’re doing so much more than delivering gas.

So today I am pleased to announce our Series C funding, led by Invus Opportunities, and to welcome two strategic investors: Enterprise Holding Ventures and Total Ventures.

I’d like to share a few thoughts on what comes next.

Expanding to 24/7 Operations

We now serve more customers in more places and deliver greater value by operating around the clock.  In a single day, every Booster mini-tanker serves both consumers and businesses.

Consumers: Each mini-tanker starts the day at select office parks, health clubs, and retail centers.  Hard working professionals rely on Booster as the smart way to get gas every week, having raved in over 6,000 reviews and hailing us as THE new corporate perk.  If you see a purple tank door cover, that’s a happy customer.  Not yet available via your employer?  Ask for us.

Businesses: At night, our mini-tankers transform into gas-run defeating ninjas for business fleets.  From food-trucks to autonomous vehicles, from ambulances to delivery vans, we fuel the modern economy.  Our smart vehicles and FuelOSTM routing platform enable scheduled on-demand fueling in a multitude of urban mobility modals never before possible.  Operate a fleet?  Learn More.

Continuing Our Commitment to the Planet

Gas done better means gas that is effortless, reasonably priced, and sustainability forward.

Our direct supply chain and exclusive focus on high-density lots improve communities by reducing congestion on our roads and pollution in our environment.  To date, we have prevented more than 2.32 million pounds of carbon emissions.  With fewer transfers in our supply chain, you get fresher fuel with no need for ground-polluting underground storage tanks.  To top it off, our direct supply chain and rigorous protocols also support lower smog emissions.  For every 100 vehicles we fuel, we have been shown to effectively eliminate the smog for another 26 cars.

Last year, we took the small step of offsetting our entire vehicle fleet by working with carbon offset leader 3Degrees to capture emissions from landfills.  We will continue to do this as we scale.

Growing Our Talented Team

It takes dynamic, multi-talented people to reinvent a $2 Trillion dollar industry. From developing state-of-the-art routing software to being on the front line delivering gas, we invest in our people. Teamwork is our fuel.

As a full-stack, operationally-complex, technology-enabled business with a massive mission, we’re hiring the best across many functions.  The personal service and attention to detail we provide is supported by automation, but itself will never be automated.  In today’s world, that really matters. Our service professionals really do deliver the magic behind every boost. Vital to our company, they are out there every day delighting customers and ideating many of our best product enhancements. We’re not just here to deliver gas, we’re here to better our community by creating real, local jobs and share company ownership and success with all members of our team.

We’re hiring.  As we move to new markets and continue to grow existing locations, we are looking for the right people to join our mission to reinvent the way energy is delivered.

Booster has become the leading same-day gas delivery service in the United States. Three years ago, when we delivered our first tank of gas, we could only imagine what the impact would be if we did this a million times over.

This year, we crossed that millionth boost milestone, and many more.  We grew our team to over 150+ employees and expanded service to over 20 cities – including to more than ⅓ of the Fortune 100 campuses located in our regions.

As we crossed these milestones, we’re also proud of the firsts we achieved in 2018:

  • Our first retail partnership with the Great Mall in Milpitas so consumers can request a boost and get a full tank of gas while they shop. (hint: more partnerships coming!)
  • Our first Tanker Technology Team – a team of engineers focused on building the next generation of supply chain, logistics, routing, tanker and database management.  It’s the best of where people and ai/machine learning change the way fuel is being delivered. Join the team!
  • And, we are the first fuel company to make our fleet of purple trucks 100% carbon neutral.  If we can make make the current fuel supply chain, and our customer’s cars 3-5% more carbon efficient, that’s a significant impact.

We do all of this in service to our customers.  We want them to get home a little earlier, a little safer, and hopefully a little happier.

And, we can’t do without our customers – or our employees, investors, city/safety officials, and partners.  We are deeply grateful for what you all give us, teach us and bring to our business everyday.

Thank you.

Today, I’m pleased to share that Booster is carbon offsetting all emissions from our vehicle fleet nationwide. We’re committed to continuing this investment as we grow.

A bit about why we’re doing this. In 2015, Diego, Tyler, and I founded Booster to fix the errand of getting gas. We wanted to improve on the gas station chore in every way. Booster had to be:

  • delightfully effortless for customers +
  • full-service in a white-glove kind-of way but at reasonable prices found at self-service stations +
  • lower strain for our environment and for commuters.

These constraints drove us to do things differently. Among other innovations, the constraints required inventing a proprietary new delivery vehicle that shortened the complex gas supply chain. This is the purple Booster mini-tanker you’ve seen in your parking lot.

Shortening the supply chain is good for economics. It’s a prime reason why we are able to offer free same-day delivery at all our service locations. But a short supply chain is also a smart way to lower strain on the environment. Fewer middlemen and one fewer fuel transfer point means lower vapor emissions and no need for underground fuel storage tanks.

Today we’re going a step further by carbon offsetting our vehicle fleet. This small action is true to our values and part of a larger phased approach to reduce emissions. Just as cutting out middlemen is a smart way to lower environmental strain, we wanted our carbon offset investments to focus on projects that are smart approaches to sustainability. We get excited when every dollar of sustainability is stretched to its maximum.

The projects that we fund are all based in the U.S., leveraging well-established offsetting standards, and delivered via permanent retirement on a public registry to ensure strong additionality. We worked with carbon offset leader 3Degrees and our support currently focuses on emission capture from landfills. We’re pretty excited to support these projects because of how effective they are.

Landfill gas (LFG) projects capture and sequester methane, a greenhouse gas that is about 30x more potent than CO2. Focusing on methane capture has numerous other side benefits that ease strain on environmental and community.

For instance, captured methane can be repurposed as fuel, displacing less sustainable sources. Secondly, just as Booster mitigates the risk from underground fuel tanks which are not in our supply chain, LFG projects mitigate the risk of groundwater pollution resulting from the leaching of toxic chemicals deposited in landfills. Lastly, landfill gas is pretty nasty stuff, and capturing methane gas prevents gas build up underground which can gradually move beneath the surface and potentially cause health issues.

Thank you for your continued support.
